Success for Corsham Primary School I

n May, Corsham Primary were delighted to be awarded the afPE Quality Mark with Distinction for the

second time running. At the beginning of April, an application was submitted documenting targets which have been developed since the last submission. These included: reviewing the curriculum in order to develop a more holistic approach to pupil development through PE; raising the profile of PE in the school through displays, an interactive screen and canvas boards depicting pupils involved in physical activity; and continuing to promote healthy active lifestyles for all children.

The process also involved a visit from two validators, who were very impressed with the ethos of physical activity at Corsham Primary School. They confirmed that the high standards of physical education had

been maintained and the profile had been raised further. During the visit a learning walk took place, where lessons and classroom practice were informally observed. As well as meeting with the PE leaders to discuss paperwork and evidence for the award, the visitors also met with other teachers and children from both key stages – these included Sports Leaders from years 5 and 6.

The validators commented on the vast array of activities and clubs that are on offer to the children and the creative ways in which active learning strategies are incorporated within the classrooms. They identified the collaboration and support between staff members and pupils as being a real strength. They also recognised the determination and dedication of the school community, striving to make physical education and being active accessible to all.
