NEW PROJECTS Salisbury City on The Move
Salisbury 2020, City on the move is the celebration of 800 years since the laying of the Cathedral’s first foundation stones in 1220.
Salisbury is unique among English cathedrals in having deliberately moved from one location to another. This movement, from the hilltop of Old Sarum to the plain where the Cathedral stands today, was the catalyst for the city to develop. And so a celebratory year themed around movement seemed obvious.
In this story, movement takes many forms: the huge physical effort required to build a new cathedral, the development in technology and engineering skills required to create this extraordinary structure and the forward- looking vision and faith that was needed to undertake such a venture - movement of body, technology and mind. And as the home of international sports stars, leading high-tech industries, authors,

musicians and thinkers, Salisbury has a proud history and bright future in all three areas.
The founding partners of Salisbury 2020 are Salisbury Cathedral with Salisbury Business Improvement District, Salisbury City Council, Visit Wiltshire, Wiltshire Council, Wiltshire Creative and Wiltshire and Swindon Sports Partnership (WASP)
As part of the initiative, WASP is planning to provide bursaries to develop 20 new sports coaches to work across the City. There will be a sports market with a series of sports clubs hosting taster events featuring
School Sport Action Plan
School Sport and Activity Action Plan will help set children up to lead healthy lives.
Children will have a greater opportunity to access 60 minutes of daily sport and physical activity, whether that be in school, after school or during weekends and holidays, under new plans published in the summer.
The School Sport and Activity Action Plan, sets out a range of new measures to strengthen the role of sport within a young person’s daily routine, explain how teachers and parents can play their part, and promote a joined-up approach to physical activity and mental wellbeing.
It comes after the latest data from Sport England’s Active Lives Children and Young People survey showed that a third of children are currently doing fewer than 30 minutes of physical activity a day.
Ofsted’s new Inspection Framework comes into effect from September 2019. As the HM Chief Inspector of Education, said: “Schools that offer children a broad, balanced education, including plenty of opportunities to get
active during the school day and through extracurricular activities, will be rewarded under our new inspection regime.”
Under the plan schools and sports clubs will be encouraged to work together to share their facilities and expertise.
Wiltshire and Swindon Sport (WASP) is one of a number of Active Partnerships that will be working with Secondary Schools and community clubs to understand what is required to increase access to school sport facilities, what activities young people want to see on offer and what support clubs and groups need to increase their capacity. Schools will be receiving questionnaires shortly about current access to their facilities and these will be followed up with more in depth consultation.
WASP will also be supporting the development of new after-school ‘satellite clubs’ to get more young people active. There are currently over 110 satellite clubs running in the county offering a wide range of activities. With the additional funding that has been received, we particularly want to focus on new clubs that offer opportunities for young girls and those young people with disabilities.

sports as diverse as croquet, paddle boarding and triathlon, and clubs and groups are invited to apply to WASP for bursaries to host events that showcase what’s currently on offer to residents. In addition, there will be walks and cycle rides to help people explore the city, discovering what has made Salisbury special in the past, but also what makes it special to people today.
We would like to see as many Salisbury Schools take part in Salisbury 2020 so if you have an idea for an event that can be part of the festival, please do contact WASP.
