The agility obstacles should create a reaction from your pony, an over trained pony can become “dumbed down” and his performance becomes just that, a performance. He should look at the obstacle and ask “what is that, is it safe?” and your answer should be “yes it’s ok, lets do it together, shall we!” He should look to you for reassurance.

I personally don’t like to see a horse or pony being directed by the handler from the end of a long lead line, something that some training methods promote, its not something we do in our everyday handling and in my opinion its dangerous in a competition situation, particularly with a small pony!

Shetland Pony Agility is fun. It is a great way of socialising with like minded people and making new friends.

Why not hold a clinic or playday at your own yard. I am currently based in Warwickshire but I’m happy to travel to all surrounding counties and beyond ! To find out more about our clinics and how to book one, please visit our website or find us on Facebook, Shetland Pony Agility GROUP and page. Our website also has the dates for our other events and lots more information about the different obstacles and how to get started in agility. I look forward to meeting some of you and your ponies sometime in the future. Sally Young.

Shetland Pony Agility only has a small number of rules for you to worry about and they are:

- No whips or sticks - No bridles or pressure halters in competitions. - All ponies must be 2yrs and over. - Children must at all times wear a hard hat.

- Children under 7yrs must be accompanied by an adult.

-Shetland pony agility is open to any small pony up to 43” in height.

- A well fitting headcollar is the only piece of equipment you need.
