JOE ‘S JOURNAL
t’s been another very busy few weeks where I wish there were a few more hours in every day. Although, I’d probably just fill them with more jobs!
I
Since my last journal I have been jumping abroad and had the massive excitement of The Horse of the Year Show.
Our first trip was to Bonheiden in Belgium. We took Kandleford (Tom), Tornado des Monts (Teddy), Gunner (Romeo) and Don Diego de Plata (Didi). They all jumped well over the weekend and again it was a big learning curve for me and the horses. Tom has really started to gel with me and we are getting to know each other. I am so pleased with this horse, he is going to be one to watch in the future I think.
Arena UK was a crazy busy week, we don’t stay there as it is only an hour and half from home so we can go back and forth each day with different horses. It is hard work for everyone but it does mean we can jump more of the horses. Staying away at a show is expensive. Although we have diesel costs, doing it this way does mean we can change horses each day so they all get a chance to go. Most of the five did well, I was really pleased with our 5 year old called James ARW. He had never been to anything like that and moved up a class level without any issue.
Charlotte and I set off to Canteleu, France, very early to try and beat the bad weather that was due in later that day. It was a bit of a panic to get to the boat but we made it to the
show eventually. The show was nice and very competitive. Teddy was a star and finished 5th in a very quick class. He was unlucky on the other days. This was Corloti’s first show abroad and she travelled well. She is a 6 year old mare by Peppermill out of Corlato (Dad’s Olympic mare). She jumped very well and the young horse Grand Prix was her biggest class so far.
Horse of the Year Show is always a great show and the atmosphere is fantastic when the crowd are cheering you on. When I jumped there for the first time last year I was very relaxed and any result was a huge bonus. This time I was full of expectation and probably put pressure on myself and although things went well I do wish they’d gone better. Didi jumped very well and so did Romeo; he jumped clear in the first round of the Grand Prix. The jump off didn’t go to plan
