Emily Lotte Seal
Horses for Courses By Charley Snowdon
F
rom backers to breakers, to the hunting field to the show jumping arena, Emily Lotte Seal is proving a versatile and formidable talent in and out of the ring.
28 year old Emily, returned to the UK and horses in 2014, aſter spending time pursuing an acting career in her mother’s native home of Denmark. “I like routine and horses give me that. Working away from home and not knowing when or what my next job was going to be, just didn’t sit well with me”, recalls Emily. “I love drama and singing but the lifestyle wasn’t for me; horses are where my heart is and my time in Denmark made me realise this.”
A type one diabetic, Emily is a big believer that all things happen for a reason. “I was diagnosed with diabetes a week before I leſt for Denmark”, recalls Emily. “It was a big shock and a worrying time but fortunately, as It turned out, Denmark was, and still is, the leading pioneers of insulin production and advanced treatments in the management of diabetes worldwide.”
Whilst out in Denmark, Emily used her time to recuperate aſter suffering long periods of unexplained fatigue in the UK prior to her diagnosis. “I needed that time out, away
from the horses, to recharge and a new lifestyle helped”, explains Emily. “Before I returned home, my Danish Uncle instructed me to write down where I saw myself in a years time, two years time and five years time; I will have to look back at that book because I think I’m surprisingly on track!”
A self confessed, non-lover of the gym, Emily found mucking out and riding horses everyday a welcome alternative for her diabetes management .“The more I exercise, the less insulin I have to take, and that means fewer injections”, says Emily. “Horses naturally drive you to lead an active, healthy lifestyle. Returning to horses full time really was therefore a win-win for me.”
Emily is based on the family farm in Heythrop country, in the heart of the North Cotswold countryside. “We run Brockhill Farm Equestrian where we look aſter and ride many types of horses from the hunt and competition liveries, to backers and breakers and sales liveries”, says Emily. “The farm is also home to my string of showjumpers and my Mum’s dressage horses, as well as a few DIY liveries.”
Daughter of an accomplished dressage riding mother, with a previous showjumping and current Field Mastering father, Emily’s equestrian roots were ingrained at birth. “I also have a younger brother called Jack who’s great with the horses but he’s more interested in the mechanical side of the farm, although saying that, he came tenth in the Silver Spur on a horse bought for a pound by his girlfriend and he loves his hunting!” Says Emily fondly. “If I have anything in, that I’m not sure about getting on straight away, he will always help me out; he is very naturally giſted horseman.”
A typical day on the farm begins with the morning feeds. “We are up and out by 7am to feed and hay the whole yard”, says Emily. “We then pop some horses on the walker whilst we muck out before our breakfast at 9am. I need to make time to eat properly and at regular intervals because of my diabetes, otherwise I can get ‘hangry’ and that’s not good for anyone!”
