Eventer Thomas Bird

3* level. Working with green and inexperienced horses, he and his mum (Fran Bird) have produced several horses through the levels including his current rides - Rebel Rhyme, Cowling Hot Gossip and Infinity SBK Z. He is also on an Advanced Diploma in Sporting Excellence through British Eventing and qualified as a UKCCL1 coach in 2019.

How did you get involved with Horses?

I am very lucky because my mum evented up to 3* and is a UKCC Level 3 and BHS I level coach. As well as this, she runs a riding school and livery yard and so I have always been around horses for as long as I can remember.

om Bird is a 17 year old event rider who has ridden up to Intermediate and CCI

How did eventing become your discipline?

There were several reasons that eventing became my discipline. Firstly, I wanted to follow in my mum’s footsteps and so when I found out that she had evented then that is all I ever wanted to do. Also, I have loved the cross- country discipline of eventing since a very young age so I kind of fell into eventing. Finally, the only competition I ever heard people talking about when I was younger is Badminton and so that was my goal which led me to eventing too.

Tell us about the horses you have on the Yard.

Again, I am very fortunate because I have always had support from lots of people and my uncle and aunt David and Helen Kerry have always been especially supportive and owned my pony Night Fury.

David now owns Rebel Rhyme, a 9 year old grey gelding who has just finished in the top half at his first CCI3*L at Osberton and will, if everything goes to plan, go to Blenheim next year, with me. Helen owns Cowling Hot Gossip, a 7 year old bay gelding who completed his first CCI2*L at Hartpury and has recently moved up to Intermediate where he will consolidate next year, with me. Also, I am very lucky because Parkfield Breeding have come on board as an owner for me, trusting me to ride their very special Parkfield Quintessential, an 11 year old chestnut gelding who had been Advanced before I had him and we have had a successful first year together and who I look forward to trialling for Junior Europeans next year. I have also recently been given the ride on Parkfield Distinctive, a 6 year old grey mare who next year will consolidate at Novice and hopefully Qualify for Osberton or Lyon 7 year old championships. I also have a really sweet mare, Infinity SBK Z who has been Novice as a 5 year old but has had a quieter season this year and next year will consolidate at Novice and hopefully Qualify for Osberton or Lyon 7 year old championships.

Do you have any other pets?

We have a cat called Treacle, and 2 dogs called Moss and Jack.
