Daddy Long Legs at the Barn Theatre 2nd October to 2nd November ~ Review by Carlo Vuolo

The Barn Theatre’s first musical production of this year’s incred- ibly diverse offerings, Daddy Long Legs, had audience mem- bers singing its praises and fully justified the standing ovation it received. There was always a risk in putting on a little-known production with a cast of just two actors and a three-piece orchestra but, true to form, the outcome was an outstanding success.

A packed house enjoyed over two hours of spell-binding en- tertainment, although the per- formance had such intensity and emotion that it seemed like no time at all. Rebecca Jayne Davis and Ryan Bennett playing the two charac- ters, Jerusha Abbott and Jervis Pendleton, are tested to their thespian limits, spending nearly the whole time on stage. In the early years of the 20th Century, long before personal computers, emails and mobile phones, their eventual romantic union is the result of a letter writing equivalent of online dating.

A perfect blend of song and dialogue,

Daddy

Long Legs will delight audiences of all ages, and the outstanding musical accompani- ment by Musical Di- rector Charlie

Ingles

(piano), Alex Crawford (guitar) and Rosalind Ford (cello) ensures that the whole production evolves seam- lessly from the opening number to its heart-warming conclusion.

At the risk of being repetitive this is another triumph for the Barn Theatre and definitely not one to

be missed. Five stars *****
