Chamber News Autumn Days
Yes. The clocks go back at the end of October, and we then start the gloomy days that lead up to the end of the year. I sometimes think that Christmas was only in- vented to give us a cheerful focus to get us through the worst of the winter. Most retailers are already preparing for their busiest – and hopefully – most profit- able time of the year. Nevertheless, we continue to woo them and other business people into attending our regular networking events.

We have travelled to different venues again this month, holding our evening Networking Meeting on the 9th Octo- ber at the Fleece, and the Breakfast Meeting on the 17th at Diversitea Café in the Corn Hall.
Chamber Committee members Fran Coulter and Adam Vines were on duty at the Fleece, where a good size crowd turned out to see a presentation by Vicky Hen- derson. Vicky was championing the Elios Partnership which raises awareness of and addresses mental health issues in the workplace. They run training courses for staff members, so that once trained, like a nominated First Aider deals with physical health issues, they can instead keep an eye and ear out for colleagues who may be struggling because of men- tal health issues, and signpost them to early help.
It was an interesting and also a very current topic and gen- erated several relevant ques- tions from the audience.
The Breakfast Meeting at quirky vintage café Diversitea,
Adam Vines VP Fowles
and Jan Sparrow were the committee members hosting and signing in the guests. Around 25 attended.
Rendcomb students
The setting was delightful with its old-fashioned tea cups and plates and deliberately mis-matched tables and chairs quaint mirrors and lamps. Karen spoke briefly of her background in South Africa, and then explained her ethos for the café.
We had a lovely breakfast which was followed by a talk on how Brexit could affect foreign employees in the UK, and how we could reassure and support them with the correct advice. This was presented by Christopher Rodwell of Mint Legal. Given the boisterous shenanigans going on in Parliament at that very time, it was a much more low-key talk than we might have expected!
Karen Harvey & David Fowles VP We had half a dozen en-
terprise business students from Rendcomb College, accompanied by their tutor Hannah Ash. They present- ed two of their business ideas to us. It’s good to see youngsters getting to grip with business life, and particu- larly impressive to see that their attending mentor was non-other than Callum Coles who was a finalist in our Business Awards, in the Young Enterprise category only four years ago, whilst attending Ciren College. Callum now runs his own successful company, 3DTomorrow.
Throughout October, the Cham- ber committee has been taking a moment to draw breath! However, we’re now coming up to Novem- ber, so this is the last ‘free’ month before we have to knuckle down to planning the 2020 Chamber Business Awards. It’s a long old job and a huge responsibility, and although it’s our president Anne-
marie and secretary Claire who shoulder the brunt of it, all the members of the committee play important parts too. First there’s a lot of organisation and admin prepar- ing and tweaking the categories and coordinating judg- es, booking venues etc ready for the launch in January, and then the preparation for the actual Awards in May.
