WWW.PHOENIXWINES.CO.UK New wine shop is just the tipple for Cirencester

Cirencester has a brand-new independent wine merchants in the heart of the town-centre, Phoenix Wines, on Castle Street. Set up by Simon Griffiths with funding from his father, Dean Griffiths, and a family friend, Mike Hirst (all below).

The shop has strong representation from the classic heart- lands of wine in France and Italy. However, Simon has a background in Eastern European wines, so these are also strongly represented alongside the classics and ever-popular New World wines.

Simon commented, “We are also keen to stock local produc- ers, so for example we have Cotswold Gin, Sibling Gin from Cheltenham and Corinium Ales from Cirencester, but what is most important to us is quality.”

Following a stint in the Royal Navy, followed by viticultural studies, Simon worked as a consultant to the Cypriot High Commission and Bulgarian Embassy, advising on how to sell their countries’ wines into the UK market.

Simon is assisted by Mike Hobday, who has spent the last couple of years working in the wine trade after several years of sports coaching.

“One of the best things about being an independent wine merchant is helping people to discover something new and exciting, often something they may never have tried. We can take the time to discuss likes and dislikes to help find a wine which is sure to be a hit. But nothing quite beats trying before you buy…”

Which is where Phoenix Wines’ Annual Tasting at the Corin- ium Museum on the 30th November comes into its own. A great chance to try 40+ wines, plus spirits and beers, side-by- side – meet producers, plan your Christmas purchases and enjoy great discounts on the night. £25pp available in-store or online.
