t has been exactly four years since I undertook a ‘Marina Visit’ in the UK when I travelled to Plymouth where the subject was Mayflower Marina – a Runner-up in this year’s Towergate Marina of the Year Awards (see page 30). I had already discussed my next visit on home soil with the management of Thornham Marina near Portsmouth, so was interested when a press release landed in my ‘inbox’ from one of their suppliers about an exciting new development at the facility. Thornham Marina is a member of The Trafalgar
Group operating in the leisure boating, commercial shipyard and property sectors, which has been collaborating with Walcon Marine on a project to design and build individual, stylised, high- quality pontoons to provide the bases for what The Trafalgar Group is calling the Ark 900. These floating platforms now offer attractive and practical waterside accommodation via Airbnb and
booking.com for visitors to the area. While similar provision can be found on dry land, Thornham Marina’s innovative floating units represent the first of their type in the UK and I look forward to viewing them during my visit. The customised pontoons are based on Walcon’s proven System 21 format, but feature extensive

detailing as specified by The Trafalgar Group to complement the curved, organic design of the two- person Arks. Measuring 9x5 metres at their widest points, concealed beneath their decking is the substantial floatation needed to ensure both the structure and its occupants are supported in safety, as well as the plumbing and electrical systems that are required for the luxury accommodation. The Arks themselves are constructed with
wooden exterior shells in clinker-built style, with overlapping planks over a steel frame, adding a touch of nautical nostalgia. Features include insulated wall cavities, electric under-floor heating, air-conditioning, sound systems, LED lighting and en-suite facilities. The Arks are designed to be highly stable when
moored in the marina, but can, if necessary, be manoeuvred independently around the harbour using a high thrust outboard motor. Many years ago, I stayed on a two-storey
houseboat at Faro Blanco Marina at Marathon in Florida. I enjoyed the experience and look forward to witnessing this new interpretation of an old concept.
