ENVIRONMENTAL

inviting feeling from the road and from the water. Almost every hotel places a great deal of emphasis on the appearance of the facility as one approaches it, as well as in the lobby and as one walks into a room. Why? This is because good first impressions create a favourable mindset. Driving into a boatyard or marina that is pleasantly landscaped, in good order and easy to get in and out of creates the vision of a place where you want to be and spend time (and unconsciously money). The perception of value can also

apply to providing many of the amenities and services that have nothing to do with boating per se, but which are increasingly expected, such as swimming pools, athletic facilities, restaurants, concierge services, childcare, etc. Even though many of these facilities and services may never be used by patrons, the provision of such services and amenities can contribute considerably to the perceived value of the facility.

Marina assessment So, if you cannot provide all these ancillary services and amenities are you doomed? No, but you need to appear to at least be trying. In fact, the perception of having all of the accoutrements available is in many cases more important than their actual use. The perception of value cannot be underestimated. Maybe you can’t provide a shuttle

service to town, but you probably can provide a couple of bikes or a bulletin board or web links to taxi services. Maybe you can’t provide childcare, but there may be a local childcare provider that would be happy to have weekend customers and whose contact info could also be on the bulletin board or website. Maybe you can’t afford or don’t have room for a pool, but maybe there’s the chance for a sundeck and playground with water features such as fountains.

Pleasurable experience Providing a pleasurable boating experience is a must and it encompasses much more than just having a place to berth one’s boat. It all comes down to the perception of value and satisfied customers. After all, it is ultimately those satisfied customers that will keep your marina afloat and be your greatest advertising and source of new business.
