There is an old saying that “Calculations don’t lie, but liars calculate.” Consider data about unemployment: If you disregard those who have given up looking for work (as government agencies do), then your data looks much better. Officially, there are about 557,000 homeless in America. Unofficially, the number may be over seven million.
THE CAUSE…
What has caused the growing homeless crisis? Several factors have contributed.
The global economy has exported jobs from the United States to countries with a low-paid workforce. The advance of technology has eliminated many low-skill jobs. There are jobs available in the US, but many demand an educated workforce at a time when the quality of public education has deteriorated. Many people graduating from high school are getting a diploma, but not the key skills and knowledge that prepare them for life.
Costs for everything are on the rise, but ordinary income has stagnated. For example, the cost of housing or rent has sky-rocketed across the nation. The day when a single wage earner could support a household and family are a distant memory for many.
