2018 National Coaching Award Recipients Announced


Ottawa, ON, July 18, 2019 –Equestrian Canada (EC) is pleased to announce the re- cipients of the 2018 Na- tional Coaching Awards. These awards recognize coaches and instructors from all disciplines and contexts who exemplify the coaching and teaching prac- tices of the National Coach- ing Certification Program (NCCP).


The 2018 recipients are as follows:

of Saint-Gabriel-Lalemant, QC, was named the 2018 Coach Developer of the Year for her tireless work supporting the Equestrian

Coach Specialist in Western and General Performance, as well as a National Coach Certification

(NCCP) Coach Evaluator and Learning Facilitator. She has mastered these roles with compassion and empathy while maintaining high professional standards, and became a leader in Coach development in Que- bec in the process. Cornelis- sen is a vital resource who works vigorously to prepare Coach Candidates for eval- uations and update western Coaches in their education: in November 2018, she led an information session on the Learn to Ride and Coaching programs for Cheval Québec members and 65 Instructors and Coaches. Cornelissen has been integral in growing participation in western coaching and education in Quebec, and embraces change and development as vital to the growth of the sport. Competitive Coach of the

2015, Racher and her hus- band, Len moved to the re- mote northern Alberta town of La Crête in McKenzie County. She immediately became active in their equestrian community and introduced many to the Learn to Ride - Western program. Racher’s dissemi- nation of the program was so successful that in the fall of 2018, Ridgewood School of the Fort Vermillion School Division hired her to develop a riding program for select students to en- hance their education. Racher presented them with Cheval Québec’s P’tit Trot program for a three-year pilot project, which is successfully finishing its first year. She continuous to embrace education programs and actively en- courages others to do the same, leading to positive growth within her local equestrian community.

Guertin, who is an


Equestrian Canada (EC) certified High Performance 1 Dressage Coach, has op- erated Centaur Riding School since 1989, when she took over ownership from her parents. Through- out her 30-year history of running the facility, she has been a dedicated Coach and mentor, providing every learning opportunity possi- ble to her many students. Guertin encourages students to complete the EC Learn to Ride program, ensuring they have the proper foun- dation for a comprehensive equestrian education. She also designed a program called “Horsemanship for Youth” for ages eight and up that runs for two hours a week and includes horse- manship and a riding les- son. Additionally, Guertin organizes 10 horse shows each summer for all levels of


competition. From


schooling to Gold level dressage shows, her stu- dents have many opportuni- ties to dip their toes in and see what competition is all about.


Guertin is a strict but


patient, fair and positive Coach who encourages each student to conquer fears and find resolution for every issue they face. Her students feel that she exem- plifies her dedication to dressage by investing everything she can into cre- ating Canada’s future top athletes. Guertin always looks for her students to achieve success, no matter how small the steps needed are to achieve their goals.
