WENHASTON BRANCH WEA AUTUMN COURSE
AFTER a successful history course in the spring Wenhaston WEA is delighted to host Dr Stephen Poulter's course 'From Page to Screen' adapting literature for the movies.
Nearly two-thirds of Best Picture Oscar winners over the past 80 years have been adapted from books, short stories, graphic novels, plays or epic poems. Many thousands more successful and popular films from the very earliest days of cinema through to the present day have been based on literary works. From popular bestsellers like Ben-Hur and The Silence of the Lambs, encompassing the period novels of Dickens and Jane Austen, great literary fiction such as Lord of the Flies and To Kill A Mockingbird through to current
g
autobiographies and erotica, this course looks at how cinema has used the written word over more than a century as the source and inspiration for so many movies.
The course will start on Friday 27th September and runs
for seven sessions
from 10am -12noon with a break for half term. The cost is £54 subject to financial support from WEA in certain circumstances.
The course venue is
Wenhaston Village Hall, The Street, Wenhaston, IP19 9EP. As is our usual practice the
first session will be a 'taster'. However in a change to WEA policy please make an early booking or enrol online or by telephone direct to the WEA before commencement of the course if you can or immediately after the first session.
This can be done
at:
wea.org.uk or 0300 303 3464. The course number is C 2226895. If you have any difficulties with enrolment or would like any further information on the course or our WEA branch please contact Barry Norrington, Secretary barry. norrington48@btinternet. com, 01502 478762.
The Cut is delighted to announce SHAKE, a new Shakespeare festival for everybody
The ambitious new SHAKE festival aims to blend fun, scholarship and theatrical expertise, in an inclusive, immersive event designed to appeal to all ages. It will take place at the end of Halloween half term, on the weekend of 26-27 October. “We want this to be open to everyone – whether you know anything
about Shakespeare
or not” said Jenny Hall, the festival director. “Workshops will have audiences as well as participants, and some will have professional actors, while some will be open to all so that anyone interested will be able to have a go.”
Jenny Hall was invited to
create a festival after giving two workshops in May at The Cut, in speaking Shakespeare’s Verse
using the method
her father taught her when she played Miranda in his production of The Tempest at the National Theatre.
The line-up is as follows but is subject to changes: Director
Lucy on Bailey
(Witness for the Prosecution at County Hall) will do a workshop based Andronicus titled
Titus Shock
& Gore– her production at London’s Globe Theatre had audience
members fainting every night. theatre Lucy has
worked extensively at Snape and formed the Gogmagogs musical
group in
Suffolk, which she says is the place of her heart! Suffolk based Ian Kelly, the stage and screen actor and writer best known for his 2015 West-End hit play; ‘Mr Foote’s Other Leg’ starring Simon Russell-Beale and directed by Sir Richard Eyre, will give a talk titled
"Shakespeare,
Garrick and the Birth of an Icon”.
Dame Harriet Walter, the
brilliant actress recently seen in ‘Succession’ on HBO and reported to be joining the cast for Killing
Eve, will,
availability permitting, lead a workshop on Shakespeare and Gender, and her two books on Shakespeare will be available in the foyer. Walpole-based
baritone
Rob Gildon will create a musical Merrie Evening of Shakespeare-inspired
music
and poetry read by Jenny Hall. John Wyver of Illuminations
Media, will present two films of famous stage productions. Before the screening, he will discuss film and television adaptations of RSC productions as well as his work producing the RSC Live from

mesmerising three hours." 2. A Midsummer Night's Dream (1959), with Charles Laughton,
Hardy,
Mary Ure, Ian Holm, Vanessa Redgrave,
Albert Finney.
Directed for stage by Peter Hall. This is a rare screening of a historic recording made on the stage of the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Stratford- upon-Avon. Peter Hall's glorious stage production starred
the Laughton great as Bottom
Charles and
featured a host of emerging actors who would distinguish RSC productions in the next two decades. The black-and- white recording was made for
American television but
seemingly never broadcast, and includes a delightful prologue by Laughton wandering the streets of Stratford as well as a welcome to the theatre by a youthful Peter Hall.
The Cut Choir will sing Shakespearean songs. The SHAKE Art exhibition will run from September 12- 27 and boast works by Suffolk locals Stuart Pearson-Wright, Celia Lyttleton, Jenny Polak (Norfolk and New York), Eamonn

Professor Grace Ioppolo of Reading University will give a lecture about Shakespeare’s troupe and the trouble they got into when touring in Suffolk and other places, titled: “Vagrant and licentious rabble”: The life of a travelling actor

Roger Eno will compose original music for a Dance workshop, led by Cut co- founder Caroline Mummery – centering on Ariel’s song ‘Come Unto These Yellow Sands’ from The Tempest. The Festival will kick off with a Banquet on Friday 25th October, with special catering by Café 51 of Southwold. The menu will be based on food that Shakespeare referred to. Hall will run three workshops during the festival, one each for children, teens, and adults.
James Holloway, a founder
of The Cut who has directed many outdoor Shakespeare productions up and down the east coast, and taught at Summerhill School in Leiston, will give two workshops on Julius Caesar. Cordelia
