McTimoney Animal Association T

he McTimoney treatment is a form of chiropractic manipulation used to treat pain and dysfunction of the musculoskeletal system. The treatment focuses largely on optimising the alignment of an animal’s spine and pelvis, with the objective of restoring correct function of the skeletal system, nervous system and surrounding soſt tissue. A non- invasive technique, the treatment aims to resolve an animal’s musculoskeletal system, to restore health and movement, soundness and performance. The McTimoney Animal Association (MAA) is the professional body representing fully qualified McTimoney Animal Practitioners, ensuring ongoing training, support and insurance for its members. Its name hails from chiropractor John McTimoney, who created and developed the technique on humans during the 1950s, later adapting it for use on animals. The McTimoney approach is a highly effective and holistic

treatment using chiropractic techniques to stimulate the change necessary in your horse's spine and locomotory system and remove discomfort. Each vertebra making up the spine has an optimal range of movement between each one and when joint movement is reduced or one-sided, this produces palpable changes in the spinal column, as the body tries to counter the effects of the underperforming joint. McTimoney Animal Practitioners identify these areas and use gentle chiropractic techniques to realign the structure and bring the body back into balance. This treatment specifically seeks to rebalance the skeletal

frame of your horse to achieve symmetry and equal functioning of the leſt and right sides. Many horses are one sided and schooling exercises are targeted towards improving flexibility but if your horse's skeletal frame is not straight, it is impossible for him to move equally on both sides. All members of the MAA are qualified following training at The McTimoney College in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, having studied up

to three years at postgraduate level attaining an MSc or Post Graduate Diploma in Animal Manipulation, the only validated course of such a level within Europe. Graduates are able to offer animals chiropractic treatment based on the original McTimoney technique and approach and all MAA practitioners work closely with vets to ensure a safe, appropriate and effective treatment is carried out on all individual animals. For every patient, the veterinary surgeon of an animal must

provide consent before any form of McTimoney chiropractic treatment is administered. The McTimoney approach begins by taking a detailed case history and a whole-body static and dynamic assessment of the animal. This process is essential to distinguish areas of dysfunction, asymmetry and patterns of movement. The McTimoney approach aims to help resolve performance

issues which may not be resolved through veterinary intervention. Injuries or trauma can produce compensatory movement and postural problems, resulting in changes in spinal flexibility. Long- standing compensations from poorly fitting tack or incorrect foot balance are also common reasons for discomfort and symptoms of poor performance. Practitioners use their hands to administer the treatment and

whilst the technique is gentle, the movements can be adjusted to become lighter or smaller accordingly, dependant on the individual. Once treatment has been given, muscle tension, discomfort and nerve impingements are released, allowing the body to move and function at its optimum level. Personal aſtercare plans are designed to ensure that an animal’s body is supported during the immediate weeks post-treatment, dependant on the individual’s regime and to assess whether further treatment is required. The McTimoney Animal Association is responsible for setting

professional standards for its members and for maintaining a professional code of ethics. All members are required to carry full indemnity insurance and to maintain their level of expertise by undertaking continuing professional development aſter they have qualified. All McTimoney Animal Practitioners are registered with the

McTimoney Animal Association. For further information or to find a MAA practitioner in your area, visit
