Feature: Made in South Yorkshire
As a metallurgy graduate from Sheffield University, it was I who walked through the door and stated,
quite excitedly, that if I was 18 again that was the place I would want to spend my time. So how are we to excite 18-year-olds into the traditional steel industry if this is the competition? Admittedly, the traditional steel industry
‘Steel is
is not what it was when I first graduated. Technological advances are everywhere, and I no longer go home with soot in my hair and a ringing in my ears. However, we are still looking at a heavy, largely manual process often in a less than pristine workplace, even with the lifting devices, extraction systems and the health and safety controls we have in place. Steel is unforgiving and many processes still require
unforgiving and many processes still require physical strength’
physical strength and uncomfortable protective equipment. Steel is cold in the winter, holds the cold and the operation is often extremely hot in the summer. The argument could be that these businesses need to
invest in the future and look to further improve the working environment and the working practises. I would be the first to agree with this principle but, as I look at the SMEs working within this wider steel industry, I must wonder if they are able to take on these demands without some form of support. I don’t have a magic wand and I don’t have the answer
to hand out on a plate but I ask those running these businesses to look at how they are going to ensure the future of their business and ensure they are able to attract their future workforce. It will not come easily, and they will have a battle to attract the younger workforce away from their technological rivals. However, we need Government locally and nationally to
recognise that this wider steel industry exists and to recognise how crucial it is to the economy of UK PLC. The
funding streams need to be put in place to allow this sector to develop and improve but more importantly there needs to be a link between education and business that enables young people to see value in the wider steel industry and look upon it as a future career option.
