Our excellent parent committee ‘Friends of Bassenthwaite School’ organised for all the children from Nursery to Year 6 to collaborate with local artists Claire and Phillip, from Active Art, to create a beautiful new art installation in the school entrance. The installation depicts each pupil (characterised by a fish they have created) leaping out of Bassenthwaite Lake. This represents our school ethos ‘small school, BIG opportunities’ as each child is ‘leaping out’ to catch their next opportunity.

Yorkshire. Luckily, they did not lose anybody in the interesting mazes and rooms there, but they did have lots of soggy children (and teachers!) when statues decided to squirt them as they passed by! Meanwhile, the infants headed off to explore Lowther Castle in Penrith.

Transition for our Year 6 who are moving up to Keswick School has been extremely successful. They all met their year head when he visited earlier in the term and know which classes they are in when they transfer to Keswick School in September. They are all looking forward to meeting new people and to the new experiences that will open up for them. It is wonderful that any pupil who attends Bassenthwaite School can be assured a guaranteed place at Keswick School.

More collaborative artwork has also taken place in the woodland during our forest sessions, with the juniors creating natural material sistrums (an Ancient Egyptian instrument) and the infants creating natural weaves. Alongside this, all pupils also took to the stage to perform our summer performance of ‘Mystery at Magpie Manor’ to parents, governors and other members of the community.

All year groups had ‘fantastic finishes’ to their summer term topics with the juniors visiting The Forbidden Corner in North

Our pledge to be a more eco-friendly school is also going very well. Our ‘Eco- Warriors Club’ have organised for us to be a recycling point for crisp packets and batteries and soon, a recycle point for toothpaste tubes. They have also started to reduce our plastic waste in our school lunches and written to a local supermarket asking them to look at how they package their food and the need for changes. We are looking forward to seeing what other initiatives and ideas the club come up with when they meet again in September.
