ALL THE LATEST NEWS, VIEWS AND STORIES FROM AROUND YOUR LOCAL AREA:AUGUST/SEPTEMBER

What are your best memories from your school days? For many of us, the answer would include school trips and opportunities outside of the usual lessons.

As another academic year moves on and we brace ourselves for A-level and GCSE results days, it’s a great time to reflect on some of the less measurable and more memorable science-based activities enjoyed by Cockermouth School students, throughout the year.

We are always proud of our students’ academic achievements but they offer so much more than this and we love to celebrate the strengths of every member of our community.

This year marked our first entry into the International competition, First LEGO League, in which two teams of Year 7-9 students presented creative engineering and social solutions to living in space, as well as competing in a robotics challenge.

Inquiry based learning builds critical thinking skills, which are important to decision making in all aspects of our children’s lives.

Undoubtedly, many of you will have seen the amazing footage of our helium balloon, which was launched into the upper atmosphere in March. You won’t have seen the 50-point pre-launch checklist, devised and used by the Year 12 students, to make sure that the morning went as smoothly as possible. Peter Woolaghan (MD, REACT Engineering) was genuinely ‘blown away’ by the teamwork on display. Yet again, we thank REACT Engineering for their huge contribution to our younger students’ education through the annual London Science Museum roadshow and Tim Peake Space Descent tour.

Year 2 students from All Saints’ School enjoyed

a visit from our sixth formers, investigating the viscosity of slime. The team researched, planned and delivered a very successful investigation and the students had a great time.

Anyone who dares to suggest teenagers are disengaged, should spend some time with our Hollr group, supported by Nicola Lynch (social impact associate at Gaiacene). Their scientific knowledge has been put to good use as part of a social activism project, to design and test creative solutions to the problem of drink spiking; a subject they feel passionate about.

These projects are designed to spark a student’s natural curiosity, not only in important scientific topics but also to develop the ability to think critically in the world around them. They represent a tiny fraction of what we do in Cockermouth School but every single activity has developed life skills, as well as being great fun and making lasting memories for all those

involved. If you feel able to contribute in any way and support an amazing bunch of young people, please get in touch; we’d be delighted to hear from you and you’ll also gain a lot in the process. Next year, we hope to go bigger and better!
