The craft cider market has a lot to be excited about.

Now worth £3.1bn and having seen a growth of 4% over 2018, the category is benefiting from substantial innovation. The good news for both emerging brands and more established cider makers is that there is still plenty of consumer appetite.

With this significant growth, comes the increase in pubs, restaurants and venues looking to keep up with consumer demand. The category has really come to the fore in the last five years, with businesses now having the luxury of selecting premium cider offerings. However, while the UK beer and cider landscape is being redefined in line with the steady flow of NPD being introduced, it is now more important than ever for quality to remain a high priority in the mind of buyers.

One area where the craft cider market is set to experience extensive innovation and move in a positive direction, is in within the health and wellness sphere. This remains a top priority for consumers, meaning venues need to recognise and align with the rising demand for low and no-alcohol alternatives. Consumers are savvy when it comes to the producers who are dedicated to premium innovations and they are recognising that they no longer need to settle for sub-standard drinks. Sheppy’s were one of the first cider brands to cater for this exact trend with its recently launched Low-Alcohol Classic Cider which has all the flavour of its traditional cider but without the alcohol.

With champions of this newly emerged category now expecting quality and variety without needing to compromise on taste, venues should look to fill and accommodate for this with a trusted source.

David Sheppy commented: “The cider category has experienced

excellent growth due to experimental NPD in recent years and we believe that the very best cider will always be of the traditional apple variety. The importance is now on how we use the 200 years of Sheppy’s traditions to cater for emerging trends and new markets. Ensuring that innovation is at the forefront of everything we do, we will continue producing the very best craft cider.”

With six generations of cider making behind it, Sheppy’s has demonstrated its commitment to producing the very best quality ciders and although perceptions of craft will differ, Sheppy’s believes it encapsulates many of the renowned qualities related to the term. David Sheppy, Master of Cider and the current custodian of the family run business, is an advocate for innovation and ensuring the legacy of the family’s long cidermaking history adapts with emerging trends.
