Castle’s ‘£39mboost’ to the local economy

LEEDS Castle contributes £39 million to the local economy an- nually, according to its chief exec- utive. Sir David Steel revealed the

treasure house’s worth to the Maidstone community in his regu- lar column in the parishmagazine for Leeds and Broomfield villages. Whilst the charitable trustwhich

runs the attraction has to spend £15m each year to maintain the castle, its grounds, attractions and events, its principal aim to is to benefit the public in accordance with the wishes of former owner LadyOlive Baillie (pictured). SirDavidwrote: “To achieve the

benefitswewish for the public,we have to spend about £15ma year – that is the cost ofmaintaining and improving the facilities at Leeds castle. “We are a charity, whose princi-

pal aimis tomaintain and develop the castle throughmembers of the public who feel pleased to pay for

that her estate now contributes £39m to the local economy each year, she would be apologetic to the disruption that some of our larger events cause to traffic flow around the estate, but she would see the bigger picture and hope that our neighbours would do so also.” Leeds Castle’s management,

staff and volunteers have been staging the 900th anniversary cele- brations with a series of high pro- file events throughout 2019. It was feared that Brexit might

their admission. “In addition, however, our visi-

tors also know that they are con- tributing to LeedsCastle’s support to other charities and, in 2018/19, we estimate that other charities benefited by about £600,000 and through support given by the Leeds Castle Foundation.” Sir David is sure that Lady Bail-

lie “would be proud”. He adds: “And if she were told

have an adverse effect on the cas- tle’s fortunes. The attraction drew bumper

crowds over the warm and sunny Easter break and 11,000 day visi- tors for theMotors by theMoat. Sir David added: “The 300 or

salaried staff and 60 or so volun- teerswhowork atLeedsCastle are passionate about this place and share theirpassionwith all our vis- itors.”

News Boots denies

store closures RETAIL giant Boots the Chemists has refused to rule out the closure of itsMaidstone town centre out- lets as part of a programme of cuts. The owners of the chain are un-

derstood to have placed more than 200 outlets under review, with the potential of the stores being shut over the next two years. A spokesman for Boots UK

said: “We currently do not have a major programme envisaged, but we always reviewunderperform- ing stores and seek out opportu- nities for consolidation. “As is naturalwith a business of

our size, we have stores opening, closing and relocating on a regu- lar basis, butwe have had around 2,500 stores for several years now. “In fact, we’re investing in our

stores – last year,we completed a huge merchandising project to update our self-selection cosmet- ics areas in 2,200 of our stores. “We are being realistic about

the future and we will need to be agile to adapt to the changing landscape.”

repairs and adjustments through to new sets we can offer a complete denture care service. Although the work is done ‘in house’ with

partial dentures and other more complex cases we work closely with the dentist. It is essential that the health of any remaining teeth are checked out before denture construction. This is necessary to ensure the prosthesis is a long term solution. We can accept referrals from you own dentist or we can arrange an appointment with one of our dental colleagues at your first appointment. Having the laboratory on the premises reduces

the waiting time for some services, some services like repairs can even be done while you wait. It is also an advantage as some larger adjustments can be done in house We pride ourselves in making sure everyone we

treat is happy with the product we produce and want our patients to have the confidence that their denture has been constructed with the utmost care and using only quality materials. Our aim is to make people comfortable with our treatment and confident with our product.
