Hedge row

COMPLAINTS from villagers about the removal of a hedge by developers during the nesting season have been ignored. Hollingbourne Parish Council

noted the lack of response from Fernham Homes in light of the complaints about the grubbing of trees behind the Eyhorne Street site at Easter. Separately, councillors decided

to oppose the developer’s appli- cation to change the design of the four “more affordable” houses on the site from a terrace to two blocks of semi-detached houses, with a metre gap between them.

munity Centre in Groom Way starts at 7.30pm (doors open from 7pm). Refreshments will be avail- able. Entry is £5 for non-members and £4 for members.

Village shop closure brings volunteer plan

THE idea of a community shop run by volunteers is being inves- tigated inHollingbourne. The parish council accepted the

shop in Eyhorne Street was no longer commercially viable and owner Christopher Rudgard’s in- tention to retire at the end of the year, after 15 years manning the counter. With the nearest convenience

nearest stores at least three miles away in eitherdirection, the idea of a community shop was suggested as the only way forward by Mr Rudgard. Declining sales of newspapers

and cigarettes; changes in the vil- lagedemographic, withmore com- muters; and an increase in online shopping have all been blamed. Theparish council heardthat the

business was still struggling, in spite of rent-free accommodation from the landlord, Paul Teague, but agreed to investigate the idea of a community shop because as
