MP calls for schools ideas

MP HELEN Whately has called onmembers of the public to sug- gest alternative sites to the Popes Fieldlocationfor twonewschools near junction seven of theM20. The borough council narrowly

(DfE) schemewent through, despite prolonged protests fromlocal peo- ple worried about the dangers of Bearsted Road, congestion and a lack of demand. Writing in Chart Sutton Village

News,MrsWhately said: “If anyone knows a better site please letMaid- stoneBoroughCouncilknow.” Her plea came as the most vocal

opponent of the scheme, Boxley Parish Council, accepted defeat and decidednot topursue it anyfurther. The schoolswillbeoverlookedby

published a statement to say she had brought together several agen- cies, including Kent County Coun- cil (KCC),DfE,EducationandSkills FundingAgency (ESFA) and Leigh Academies’ Trust, which will run the schools. It addedthe resultwas theycould

be built on the “most appropriate” KMC site subject to planning con- sent and funding. But in the newsletter, Mrs

Whately writes: “I’ve asked KCC andESFA...whether there’sanother possible location, but they’ve told me that Popes Field is the only suit- able site. Ihavenodirect sayinplan- ningdecisions like thisandIwasnot involved in choosing the location.”
