Improved tracking of staff absence can help you save money and increase staff retention

y tracking staff absence and producing the right reports, schools using SAM have reduced absence by an

Key things to monitor ■ The type of absence occuring
with a particular employee: Is there a pattern emerging? Do the timings of absence raise cause for concern? Is there anything you can do to help reduce this type of
absence or support the employee? ■ The type of absence occurring across a department: Is there a pattern that raises concerns for a particular team or line manager? Do you need to alter working patterns or reduce workload to minimise stress? Are adjustments needed to the management style? Do staff need support in how to have
conversations about absence? ■ The type of absence occurring across your whole organisation:
Do you have a high number of people absent with a specifi c illness? Could you, for example, hold fl u clinics or
stress-awareness workshops? ■ Long-term versus short-term absence: Which kind of absence needs your attention? Short-term illnesses could be reduced by focusing on hygiene, diet or workloads. Long- term cases may need better management and support in order
to return to work. ■ Time periods: Do you have an issue with absence in a particular timeframe? This could be a specifi c day or time of year, perhaps leading up to exam
periods or half-terms? ■ Cost: Do you know how much staff absence is costing your school overall, by employee and by department? Before you take action, you need
a starting point to track from. If you are a MAT you can then benchmark this across your schools. Pulling all of this information together helps you to identify issues and put in place proactive measures to help retain staff and save money.
