Centre stage

Applications are now open for two free National Theatre training programmes for young people age 14-18. Now in its third year, the Young Technicians programme runs between October 2019 and March 2020 and covers lighting, sound, video and stage. It gives participants the chance to shadow National Theatre professionals and provide technical support to the NT youth programme during the Easter and summer holidays. Applications need to be in by 11 September. In August, the brand-new Young Makers Programme is a week-long course that will explore the craft of production, including costume and props. Applications close 14 July. No prior knowledge or work experience is required. The National Theatre is committed to diversity and encourages applications from young women and people of colour. To find out more, visit nationaltheatre.org.uk/young-people.

A NEW HOME

FOR OLD BOOKS If you’re having an end-of-year clearout to make way for new textbooks, you may be unsure of what to do with the old ones. Help A South African School will collect books for free and send them to children in South Africa, where only seven per cent of schools have libraries. Visit helpasouthafricanschool.co.uk/ book-donation for more details.

CREATIVE TALKS Penguin Talks is a programme of free inspirational talks that give young people the opportunity to hear from and directly question a world- renowned thinker, writer or influential figure. Each Penguin Talk is available online, together with free resources for teachers, enabling pupils in classrooms across the UK to engage with the themes and issues discussed. Previous talks include Michelle Obama on the power of education and self-belief. Secondary schools can even apply to host a future Penguin Talk by emailing comms@ penguinrandomhouse.co.uk. Visit penguin.co.uk for more details.

BETTER BUYING Education.co.uk offers a quick and free way for schools to source products and services. Simply pick what you need from the school-focused categories and state your budget. Once your request is submitted the company will connect you with suppliers who have experience working with schools – you can even see case studies on their profiles.
