was recently announced as the 2019 recipient of the National Snaffle Bit Association’s Jack Benson Award. Named for the late NSBA member Jack Ben- son, the award is presented an- nually since 1989 to an individual who unselfishly gives his or her time to promote NSBA and its mission and cre- ate greater interest in the pleas- ure horse industry. Heckaman has been involved in NSBA al- most since it was created, and he served as president 2002-2003.


Losses Smokey Davis, 85, died


March 25 at home in Fulshear. The Texas cowboy legend was pickup man around the country and at the Texas Prison Rodeos for 12 years before he bought out Sloan Williams and became a well-known rodeo producer. He raised his family in rodeo. He was inducted into the Texas Rodeo Hall of Fame in 2011.


Radical Rodder, a 1991


AQHA brown stallion, was hu- manely euthanized on April 11 due to complications of old age. The 1998 AQHA Senior West- ern Pleasure World Champion had sired 1,024 AQHA horses, 13 Australia Quarter Horses, and 57 APHA horses at the time of his death, and so far those have earned more than 50,000 points and over $1,600,000. Since 2001, Radical has been on the AQHA Leading Sire list for both halter and performance. Bred by Tom Chown and Carrie Chown Oakley, he was pur- chased as a yearling by Diane Chilton-Harper and her hus- band, Dr. Howard Harper, of Pilot Point. The legendary stud was laid to rest at Diane’s ranch.w
