Junior Golf

WHILST RLGC AND indeed all clubs are financed largely by subscriptions from adult members, we must never forget that today’s Juniors are tomorrow’s Seniors and, if clubs are to thrive (or in some cases continue to survive), it is essential that youngsters are given encouragement and support to persuade them that golf is a healthy sport which they can play for their lifetime, form enduring friendships,

and one which can be enjoyed at any level.

Golf and golf clubs are regarded in some quarters as old fashioned, which perhaps deters some youngsters from taking up the game, and a club like ours with all its history and tradition suffers in this respect as much as any, even though it is very much in tune with the modern world. With numbers of new entrants

We won the Wirral league using a total of 15 different players.

to golf declining quite dramatically on a national basis over the last few years, the golfing hierarchy both nationally and more locally in Cheshire have been taking positive measures to attract younger people - and we at Hoylake are very conscious of the importance of introducing new blood. Our new Par 3 course is a wonderful addition

to our facilities and an

attraction to beginners of all ages. Head Professional John Heggarty and his assistants provide wonderful coaching to both groups and individuals, and we are making every effort to expand our fixture list of matches with a view to introducing as many youngsters as possible to the competitive side of the game. It is crucial that our Juniors are made

to feel welcome and, whilst all clubs have certain standards of dress and behaviour, I hope that Senior members will appreciate the importance of new young people being introduced to the game and be tolerant towards those who are still learning the codes expected at Hoylake. Our current crop of Juniors includes some highly talented individuals, three of whom have handicaps of 3, several more in single figures, some of whom are involved in County and National age group coaching set-ups. Our Junior programme incorporates regular Stableford competitions during school holidays, and fixtures against other local clubs in the Wirral league. These inter club fixtures take place on Sundays and the teams consists of six players (boys and girls). Although we try to put out our best players it is rare that they are all available on the same day, but that gives welcome opportunities to other players
