had to take
place indoors! However,
the new terrace at Hoylake has rightly proved enormously popular for many post competition get togethers, and the huge parasol provided good shelter from the drizzle on that day (and the sun on many more days!). In October, as Shirley Wynn Jones
reports, we hosted the Millennium Cup, which is something we will do every eight years. We narrowly lost in the semi-finals - with a few matches going to the 19th - and this was followed by a well attended dinner
upstairs which was as usual
delicious. Sustainability and the reduction of
plastic has been a theme for me during the year and we have made progress in encouraging members to bring their own flasks to the half-way house and recycle where possible. Other Initiatives are in motion - our Head Professional, John Heggarty, now supplies reusable water bottles and bamboo biodegradable T pegs. All ideas to help tackle this very ‘current’ issue will be warmly received!
ALL CHANGE Changes to rules and handicaps have all brought new challenges this year and will do so in the years ahead. We have a wide range of golfing abilities in our section with a high number of single figure golfers alongside a newer group of beginners. It has been our aim to integrate the high and the low and weekend and weekday golfers. We wish to preserve and foster the fun and inclusive attitude
in our section. It is wonderful that the coming year sees Jeanne Bell as Cheshire Captain and Helen Heggarty as Cheshire Seniors Lady Captain. I wish them both every success and I am sure they will do great jobs.
My successor, Maureen Richmond,
has a stunning golf pedigree sustained throughout her golfing life and I know the Club will be in excellent hands going forward. I wish her the best of luck in a very big year ahead!

The Millennium Links Cup, a ladies’ golfing competition, was inaugurated in - you’ve guessed it - the year 2000. This popular and successful competition is played between members from eight links golf courses on the North West coast of Merseyside. It is contested each year and allows players of all handicaps to take part. On Monday October 1 2018 the
semi-final and final were held at Hoylake. The four semi-finalists were Royal Liverpool, Royal Birkdale, Formby and Wallasey. An early morning draw on the
day established order of play: Royal Liverpool v Wallasey and Royal Birkdale
v Formby. Wallasey and Royal Birkdale
progressed to the final in the afternoon. In fading light and poor weather conditions on the links at the end of the day Wallasey emerged as victors. Over 100 ladies from participating Clubs attended a dinner in the evening at RLGC where the Captain of Wallasey Golf Club accepted with pride and much jubilation the Millennium Links Cup Trophy 2018 on behalf of her team The semi-final and final of the Millennium Links Cup will be held in late summer 2019 at Formby Ladies’ Golf Club.
