Welcome A MESSAGE FROM THE CAPTAINS
A VERY WARM WELCOME to the latest edition of Royal Liverpool Golf Club’s annual magazine, one that marks a truly auspicious and exciting year for
the
Club - its 150th anniversary. It is a great honour for us to have
been elected Captains. Not only will Hoylake celebrate its sesquicentennial with an array of social and golfing events, in September it will also host the finest amateur players from the United States and Great Britain and Ireland as they fight for the Walker Cup across our historic links. In 2022 it will be the turn of the
world’s hottest talents, when The Open returns to Royal Liverpool for the 13th time. Lucky for us! On these pages you can learn how the
Walker Cup can be said to be returning to its spiritual home; read a profile of GB&I Captain, Craig Watson; a brief history of Royal Liverpool; news of the new, highly collectible book devoted to Hoylake; a look back at the Club’s war years that began 80 years ago in September 1939; how the course has inspired writers and journalists for more than a century; and Top Tips from our Head Professional, John Heggarty, which he has based on lessons given by great teachers of the game from golf’s past. We continue to tell The History of
Hoylake in 100 Objects - and if you visit Royal Liverpool we do hope you’ll have time to enjoy the best collection of golfing memorabilia outside St Andrews.
Royal Liverpool is rightly proud of
its important heritage, but keeps an eye firmly on the future of both the Club in particular and the game in general. We are proud of the warm welcome we extend to visitors from home and overseas with whom we are eager to share the course and clubhouse. As incoming Captains at such
a
special time we are enormously excited, and very grateful for all the offers of help and support we have already received. There are too many people to thank here, though special mention must be made of the 150th Anniversary Committee, led by Kieran O’Brien, which has worked very hard to ensure that 2019 will genuinely be a year to remember, together with the Walker Cup Committee, chaired by Neil McBurney, determined to make the Match a first class event for players and spectators alike. Finally, many thanks to everyone who
has contributed to these pages, and especially to all the generous advertisers without whose support this
annual
magazine would not be possible. Happy golfing! n
