Bobby Jones
Portrait - Postscript
In last year’s magazine there was a memorable account by Philip Stern of the origin of the marvellous portrait of Bobby Jones which hangs on the wall on the upper landing of the clubhouse at Hoylake. The article told the story of Jones sitting for the original being
painted by J.A.A. Berrie at Wallasey at the time of the qualifying round at that course for the 1930 Open, the Championship won by Jones as part of his Grand Slam. Berrie subsequently painted portraits from the Wallasey original that were generously presented to Hoylake and Lytham by J. R. Dixon, Philip Stern’s grandfather. A notable addition to that background is the fact that a copy of
the Hoylake portrait is in the United States hanging in the Augusta National Clubhouse close to the main entrance. It was presented to Augusta in probably 1968 by John Blackwell
(R&A), Lord Derby (Royal Lytham and St Annes), and Dr John Lawrie (Royal Liverpool), Captains of the Clubs on whose courses Bobby Jones won his three Open Championships. A memorable gesture and the fact that the Hoylake version of the
portrait was selected confirms our belief as to its outstanding quality. Anthony Shone
Hoylake Hero
Alistair Noakes plays his golf at Royal Liverpool, is steeped in the history of the Club, and is an enthusiastic writer of fiction and non-fiction. Last year he published a novel which charts the career of the legendary local amateur, John Ball. Based on careful study of golf histories, the news reporting of the day and a thorough combing of the Royal Liverpool archive, Hoylake Hero is an entertaining imagining of the life and times of a shy giant of the game, from small boy to retirement after a long and truly illustrious
career interrupted by military service during the Boer War.

Annual Swedish
On 5th August 2018 Jaz Barker, Matthew Walsh, Anna McBurney, Hayat Leung and myself departed for Sweden with junior teams from Birkdale and Caldy for the annual exchange with Ljunghusen, Flommen and Falsterbo Golf Clubs. The team members were hosted
by Swedish families and soon made to feel very welcome - we all enjoyed spectacular Swedish hospitality throughout our trip. Over the week we played each course twice and a series of six matches were contested in every format imaginable. With Sweden having won the Pinnington Pot on the last three occasions we were keen to put up a good fight. Each course is very different but all
three are excellent, if a little parched this year, due to the exceptionally hot, dry summer that Sweden had enjoyed. In fact the heat continued until the last day when the weather broke and a tornado came up the coast past Ljunghusen. The matches got off to a close start
with a 3-3 draw on day one. After that, however, ‘team England’ pulled away and an 8.5 - 3.5 win in the final day’s singles series meant a 28 - 14 victory overall and the Pot returning home with us. The matches were all played in a

great spirit and we made so many new friends - the real winner in a very special week was golf and we all felt lucky to be involved in the exchange. We look forward to welcoming our hosts to Merseyside next year. Thanks go to the other junior leaders,
