THE 9TH ANNUAL WOMEN’S INTERNATIONAL
TEAM CHALLENGE 9TH – 12TH SEPTEMBER 2018
The mission of the WITC is to bring together women from premier golfing venues to share their passion for golf, enjoy serious competition and relish the joys of friendship made through the game of golf. Ali Grant reports.
At last, and after months of meticulous planning by the WITC Committee, the competing teams’ coaches swept into the car park and pulled up by the front door of the clubhouse to be welcomed by an army of smart and smiling lady members clad in our distinctive yellow team jumpers. Having deposited golf bags into
storage, and equipment in designated lockers (thank you to the gentlemen who gave up their locker room for the event (see photographic evidence), the teams were ushered into the spike bar for a lively drinks reception where they enjoyed greeting friends from previous WITC events and meeting new team players. This was followed by a breezy flag
raising ceremony, welcoming speeches from our Chairman and Captain of the Ladies, firing of the cannon (which sobered us up!) and a team photo of all the competitors. A wonderful supper with outstanding
catering and service from Shaun Herbert and his team rounded off a successful
launch event and promised well for the competition ahead. Opening with a practice day, the WITC
competition is then played as follows: 36 holes over 2 days, 3 teams of pairs playing 4BBB Stableford; the winner is the highest total
team point score; in
addition there is a scratch Stableford team winner. Monday 10th September dawned
bright and breezy – a classic Hoylake day – and many of the overseas players were grateful of the snood and hat we provided in their “goody” bags. Practice days are a great opportunity to explore the course and test a few shots that we might otherwise not take on, and importantly to chat and get to know each other. After such a testing year for all UK
courses, the links looked great, played well and the greens in particular were excellent. Craig Gilholm and his staff had really prepared the course well and it was beautifully presented and much admired. Later that evening, all the teams assembled in Liverpool for a reception at the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral. We were greeted by the Dean, The Very Reverend Dr Sue Jones, who welcomed us into the Lady Chapel and spoke about the building of the Cathedral
before
guiding us up into the main nave to the haunting notes from great organ, which is largest pipe organ in the UK - “an instrument of tremendous power and
