Howard opined: “Five clubs will live in history as trustees of the game’s administration in its period of evolution - the Royal & Ancient, Honourable Company, Prestwick, Royal Liverpool and Royal St. George’s...A Cheshire Union would have carried little weight if Royal Liverpool had held aloof.” The CUGC is now almost 100 Clubs strong and marks its centenary in 2020.

In 1920 a meeting held here agreed the setting up of the Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs. The meeting was said to have got off to “an

Britain’s greatest ever amateur golfer, won the Amateur at Royal Liverpool. Sir Michael Bonallack, knighted in 1998, clinched the title when he beat American Bill Hyndman 3&2.


Sir Michael’s career highlights are indeed notable: British amateur champion – 1961, 1965, 1968, 1969, 1970. English amateur champion – 1962, 1963, 1965, 1967, 1968. Walker Cup – 1957, 1959, 1961, 1963, 1965, 1967, 1969, 1971 (playing captain) As Secretary of The R&A he was


instrumental in guiding golf into the 21st century, expanding The Open and re- investing heavily in the development of the game. “He’s bridged the gap between the history and heritage of The Open championship and golf in general as it moved into the commercial age and he’s done it with great taste and tact,” said the late Mark McCormack, former chairman of IMG.
