Lukesland Gardens

‘ONE of the finest gardens of its kind in the South West’ — Good Gardens Guide. ‘What a glorious, tranquil place – divine plants’, ‘Enchanting garden and a lovely cup of tea!’ — these are just some of the comments from appreciative visitors to the spectacular 24-acre Lukesland Gardens, Ivybridge. Tucked away in a peaceful woodland valley on the edge of Dartmoor

(just ten minutes off the A38), Lukesland’s noted collection of camellias, rhododendrons and azaleas provides a spectacular show of colour in the Spring, against a wonderful backdrop of wild flowers. In October and November the reds and golds of Lukesland’s fine trees

‘Glorious’ and ‘tranquil’

and shrubs reflected in the many pools and waterfalls of the Addicombe Brook are also well worth seeing. The brook is criss-crossed by a series of charming and unusual bridges and its ponds are home to wild birds, trout, tadpoles and toads. With home-made soup and cakes served up by the family in the new extension to the Victorian Billiard Room and a children’s trail to keep the younger generation amused, these gardens have something for everyone. Plants, cards, paintings by local artists, preserves and beautiful bowls, turned from Lukesland wood, are on sale. Dogs are welcome on a lead. In 2019 the gardens are open from 11am – 5pm on Sundays,

Wednesdays and bank holidays in Spring (March 31 – June 16 ) and autumn (October 6 – November 17). On Saturday, June 8 there will be a Classic Car Rally and cream teas at Lukesland from 2 -5pm. Normal entry applies. Proceeds to Harford Church and the Blood Bikes charity. For further details of the openings and other special events call 01752 691749 or go to www.lukesland.co.uk or www.facebook.com/ lukeslandgardens

The Chagford Agricultural and Horticultural Show is a traditional one day country show that is now entering its 119th year. Held on the third Thursday

in August every year, in 2019 the show is on August 15. It is situated on the beauti- ful banks of the Teign at Mill End (TQ13 8JN), Chagford, courtesy of The National Trust, Mr M Malseed, Mr P Morrish, Mr H de Ferranti and Miss B Hayter-Hames. There is ample free parking and free buses running from Moretonhampstead and Chagford all day. With classes for agricul- tural produce, horses, sheep, cattle, dogs and a vintage section, the Chagford Show embodies the best traditions of a proper country show; it’s not too big, not too small

and easy to get around. There are over 200 trade stands, a rural crafts area, a food hall displaying the best of local producers, a beer tent and lots of live music throughout the day. The main ring carries a full day of special attractions — this year it’s the Tigers Childrens Motorcycle Dis- play Team and a bird of prey flying display. There is also terrier racing, a parade of vintage tractors and cars and a lot more. The Chagford Show has something for everyone and is a great family day out — come and see for yourself. Full details of the 2019 Chagford Show appear on the website www.chagford- show.co.uk We look forward to wel- coming you all.
