Is experiencing ‘The Great Outdoors’ one of a Canadian’s favourite pastimes?

BY STAN ASHBEE insight magazine

Many southern Albertans prefer outdoor living and/or playing (even if only for a few weeks a year during a spring or summer vacation), opposed to the 9-5 grind of own- ing or renting a house in the urban swell. There’s also the snowbirds travelling down south for the winter to live in RVs or tempo- rary locales and lodgings including cabins, B & Bs, or even in a tent. Outdoor living can be a life decision or way of life for young and old. It can also be some-

thing one aspires to do whenever they can get away for a weekend or longer stay. Staycations allow southern Albertans to

leave the comfort of their own home and venture out on a localized journey close by — either to enjoy the outdoors, including camping by the lake or deep in the woods or maybe a stay at a pre-determined rental accommodation. Locally, Ridge Park Campground near

Raymond in the County of Warner sits next to a huge irrigation reservoir with plenty of recreational opportunities for visitors from Apr.15 to Oct.15 each year. Fishing, boating, and water sports are just some of the activities

for individuals, couples, or families to enjoy during their stay, which is quite common at many recreational areas in Alberta and across Canada. Ridge Park manager Artha Harker from

Raymond says she and her family live in the outdoors six months out of the year at the park.

“I absolutely love it. It’s one of those choic- es that cuts back on the junk in your life for sure. It simplifies your life a lot. Because it’s also my job, there is not a lot of relaxation completely there.I work at the campground and we’re the hosts,so we maintain and take care of everybody else. It’s not my holiday in the summer, but I love the lake. I love the campground,”she noted.
