STRUGGLING WITH LOOSE LOWER DENTURES?

also meaningful skills for daily living. For example, even in the high school Foods program, there’s a module called Fast and Convenience Foods. That would be a one-credit module focused simply on readily- available ingredients, low-cost foods, and how to put a meal together really quick.” Financial competency is usually a key aspect of modern learning, and some of the skills that are taught in Horizon schools help prepare stu- dents for home budgeting, for instance. “Within the Foods program, there’s actually modules that would relate

to nutrition, for example. If you’re planning a healthy meal, there’s Meal Planning I,Meal Planning II,which would be not only making the nutri- tional consideration, but can you afford? Are you eating lobster every night? In a home economics context, that would be a part of Foods, stu- dents would be involved with developing a grocery list — they do the planning, figure out what they have, they do the purchase.” Darroch sees continuing value in imparting these kinds of skills to

future generations of learners in Horizon School Division. “Society expects us to graduate students. Our graduate profile is some- one who is employable, has a strong work ethic, someone who is good at school but also good at life. Being able to be personally independent and plan for their own healthy household is a key part of that for sure. There are some Foods programs that operate in commercial kitchens where students that excel in the culinary arts go right into Lethbridge College to take those programs. That blows my mind when kids tap into their interests like that.More and more,we really focus on personal choice and personalized learning, so a class might take the same food basics, but then they start to differentiate. So you’ve got students in each little mini-kitchen working on different things, so the value of students taking ownership of their own learning is huge.”
