how hard it is for the boys to be away from their
parents. They want to be mature and independent, but at the same time, they are kids.We make ourselves available to the boys. We have an open-door policy basically and they can come into our place anytime they need to talk.” As part of being ‘the parents of the Jets,’
the Vulcanos do their best to keep player par- ents up to date. “I have seven kids of my own, six of them being boys, and all have or are going through baseball. We are very familiar with what it takes to raise boys, but we realize we are in a sort of partnership with their own parents,” explained Vulcano.“Throughout the day, if I see a group of boys studying, for example, I’ll snap a picture and send it to their parents to say ‘hey, this is what they are doing right now.’We actually have a parents Facebook group and I regularly post things on that page so parents can check whenever they
want.” On top of being the parent figure- heads for the play- ers, the job does require quite a bit of behind-the-scenes work that the general public doesn’t see. “My day starts at 6 a.m.,I get up and put
out breakfast for the boys. I don’t have to cook anything, but they can make their own eggs if they want. I put out bagels, bread and they have their own fridge with a constant supply of food that they have access to. If they want to make anything, they have to make it themselves and they have to clean up themselves,” said Vulcano, who also high- lighted they help out with cleaning as best they can.“We don’t expect them to be per- fect, but we do expect them to do what they are expected to do and put the effort in. Overall, it is pretty good and the boys are
great.”
While the Jets will soon be back on the baseball field, discussions are still being held to find out what players want to see in regard to additions to the player residence. “We added a pool table, the senior's centre
donated that to us this year. Our next step is to try to update some things which we haven’t had a ton of updates since we opened the
building. Now it is time for some new painting, expanding on our alumnus to make sure they are remembered and to make it as homey as we can,”said McTavish.“It’s funny,we had a couple of players who want- ed some plants and things like
that. They are teenage boys, but they want it to be as homey as possible, so that is our next goal.”
