are two main fiber types;a nylon carpet that has great texture retention and can be stained,and a polyester carpet can't be stained, but lacks tex- ture retention.Carpet tends to collect fine dust better than harder options, and is softer, cozier and absorbs sound better. Hardwood, while a more expensive option, cre-


ates a highly-desired look. “There is still nothing like the look of natural


wood,” said Winters.“You can re-sand it, it's a lit- tle bit more unique looking,because no two pieces of wood are exactly the same.” However, it can dent and scratch more easily than other options, and it is not recommended in places where it can get wet, such as in bath- rooms.


Ceramic tile is a hardy option for floors, and while it can take a fair amount of abuse, it can also cause problems because it is so hard. “For people that have lower back pain or foot


pain, it's very much like walking on a cement floor. Extremely durable,but the downside of that is at some point,when you go to change it, it's a huge labour cost to pull it out and replace it.”


Some of the core formulations of laminate flooring have changed to help it compete with vinyl plank flooring. Its surface is very hard, so it will take more to scratch it than any other floor, with the exception of ceramic tile, and is easy to replace.Additionally, as a floating product, you don't need to worry as much about the flooring underneath it being “exceptionally stable” for it


to be installed. Plank vinyl is a fairly new product,and can be either glued-down or installed as a click product. While it can scratch, it will take a fair bit of effort to dent it, but what Winters says is its “biggest selling feature”is it can be replaced and repaired quite easily, and it comes in a variety of colours and styles, so if you want, you can do different types through your entire home. Sheet vinyl flooring has a lower price point in


comparison, although if it gets damaged, it is harder to repair. It comes in a 12-foot roll in a variety of patterns and colours, so while there will be a visible seam, depending on the size of the room, it is utterly impervious. “You can have water standing on it forever, and it will never go through it.”
