INJECTED into traditional studies at Horizon

While the traditional term of “home ec”no longer really applies to the

streams of learning being fostered through Horizon School Division, stu- dents are still being provided with the foundational elements of domes- tic life. “It used to be quite a dichotomy, traditionally where girls would go into one class and boys would go into another. As a student myself, I was kind of on the fringe, that was my experience,”said Amber Darroch, associate superintendent of learner services with HSD.“But I think those option classes became more and more responsive to what students really want- ed, and what their interests were.We kind of moved from being very teacher-centered, this is what we teach in school, to what’s actually rele- vant to our students.” What used to be an omnibus catch-all phase has now transitioned into

more personalized learning for students in various interest areas. “With the evolution of society to the focus on readiness for the world

of work, those threads of potential occupations started to come in,”con- tinued Darroch.“So we saw the evolution of those big block options to current technology studies.Years ago, that evolution occurred, and rather than have one whole class with one big all-encompassing title,CTS (Career and Technology Studies) as we call it now for high school pro- gramming is a compilation of little one credit modules, it starts to get really specific but also very personalized.” Option classes, known as modules, now differentiate into much more specific areas within a learning theme. “That whole category of home economics would actually now translate

more to Fashion Studies, as far as the sewing, design, those skills. Foods would be everything related to the culinary arts.To graduate, you have to see one of those streams through to the Grade 12 level, and so a student would actually take Foods through Grade 10, 11 and 12,and that would be part of their graduation requirements is having some of those option courses.” Prior to the high school experience, students in Grade 5-9 are exposed

to what is known as Career and Technology Foundations (CTF). “Those are actual high school programs, but for anything that we teach that is not a core subject, prior to Grade 10 it falls into a category called Career and Technology Foundations,”said Darroch.“That takes more of a project approach, and more about exposure to all of the different possi- bilities, so that kids get exposed to possible career pathways, but then
