News Braille ID for

water workers WATER company employeeswho visit homes as part of their duties are now carrying Braille identity cards to reassure visually im- paired customers. South East Water says all staff

carry ID, and householders should check anyonewho arrives on their doorsteps claiming to represent the company, regard- less ofwhether it is a planned ap- pointment or unexpected. South East Water’s Steve

George said: “We encourage our customers to check the identity cards closely and, if they’d like to make further checks, we don’t mind waiting outside while they do.” Marie Chadwick, from sight

loss charity the RoyalNational In- stitute of Blind People (RNIB), said: “It's really important for blind and partially-sighted peo- ple to have confidence when being approached by somebody claiming towork for a utility com- pany, and the inclusion of Braille information can provide another tool for people to check the infor- mation provided.”

Robbers usedmachete to aack security guard

TWO men have been jailed for robbing a security guard with a machete. PeterHenderson (pictured) and Chr i s topher Downey struck on September 27 in Malling Road, Snod- land, when the officer was leaving

a

petrol station with its week- end takings. Henderson,

wearing a balaclava, snatched the guard’s case full of cash after brandishing the blade. He fled the scene in a white getaway van driven by Downey. Officers later found the vehicle

in a garage block near Saltings Road. The empty case was nearby. Police say the van had false number plates and had been

stolen. They found the machete stashed behind the driver’s seat. Henderson, of Dagenham,

Essex, and Downey, of no fixed address, were arrested and charged with robbery, handling stolen property and possession of a bladed article in a public place. Both pleaded guilty at Maid-

stone Crown Court and, on Thursday, February 28, Hender- son (36) was sentenced to eight years and three months in prison and Downey (25) was jailed for eight years. The stolen cash was never recovered. Detective Inspector James Der-

ham, of the Kent and Essex Seri- ousCrimeDirectorate, said: “This was a carefully planned crime that netted a considerable amount of cash. “A thorough investigation, in-

cluding the meticulous examina- tion of CCTV footage, allowed us to track down the offenders and ensure they were brought to jus- tice. “Henderson and Downey

showed no regard for the impact their actions would have on the security guard and it is right that they are now serving a lengthy prison sentence.”
