Gloria Oppen Joins the Southern Maine

Integrative Health Center

promotion), has joined Dr. Patrick Mulcahy at Southern Maine Integrative Health Center located at 69 York Street, Suite 4, Kennebunk. She is now ac- cepting primary care patients and has an interest in Lyme disease, Functional Medicine, preventive health, and to- bacco cessation. Mrs. Oppen recently relocated to Maine from Massachu- setts and was previously employed

G

as a nurse practitioner in the occupational health department at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Previous to that, she worked in college health, and the first Holistic health care cen- ter in New England in the 80s. She was also heavily involved in public health initiatives such as “tobacco-free hospital campuses” in the Boston area.

After contracting Lyme disease several years ago, she decided to take a different path in her career and has been reading numerous books and research articles while learning about the up-to-date assessments, diagnostic testing, and treat- ments available to Lyme and co-infected patients. Many Lyme patients have been to various providers and have been told that, “it is all in your head.” Under the mentorship of Dr. Patrick Mulcahy, a Lyme literate physician, she has learned that those who treat Lyme patients should keep an open mind, listen to their patients, and validate their concerns. Lyme disease is one of the most challenging infections to treat as it is multi-faceted. Treatment options vary from allopathic to homeopathic and what works for one patient may not work for the other. Each practitioner has his/ her own unique healing perspective and philosophy, and treatment is by trial and error. Therefore, collaborating with dedicated inter- disciplinary practitioners using various modalities while teaching patients self-management techniques, and encouraging lifestyle changes may be most beneficial to Lyme sufferers. It is exciting to watch patients eventually get their lives back.

Gloria Oppen is looking forward to resuming her career in beautiful coastal Maine. Please call 207.985.3079 to schedule an appointment. She accepts most health insurances. See ad on page 13.
