WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS ARE SAYING:

“Having access to the Chamber’s suite of training courses has been invaluable in enabling us to upskill our workforce. Working predominantly in the marine engine industry, trading internationally is an important aspect of our business and we have greatly benefited from the excellent suite of international-related courses. This not only allowed us to enhance our skills as a company, it has also seen us maintain our Customer Special Procedures Approvals, which has been hugely beneficial.”

Marie Palmer, Company Secretary, Cast Iron Welding Services

Malaysia is considered an efficient gateway into other Asian markets

Malaysia is a multi-ethnic, multicultural and multilingual society. It’s a relatively open, newly industrialised market economy, and a member of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) whose economy is predicted to become the fourth largest single market by 2030. Malaysia is strategically located

across the Straits of Malacca and the southern part of the South China Sea. The country is a federation of 13 states and three federal territories. It is divided into two geographical regions: the peninsular region, or West Malaysia, which borders Thailand to the north and Singapore to the south; and the East Malaysia region bordering Kalimantan, Indonesia and Brunei. The Malaysian economy enjoys a

competitive advantage in producing and processing primary products thanks to an abundance of natural resources including petroleum, tin, timber, copper, iron, ore, natural gas, and bauxite. This is combined with world class transport and telecommunications. Malaysia is one of the world’s top

locations for offshore manufacturing and service-based operations, which indicates there is much opportunity here for East Midlands companies to do business. Several large UK companies have a presence in Malaysia including Aberdeen Asset

Management, Allied Pickfords, BAE Systems, BP, BAT, Debenhams, Dyson, Pinewood Studios, Shell, Tesco and Weir Group. Malaysia has excellent

infrastructure, a well-developed financial sector and is considered an efficient gateway into other markets in Asia. With an educated English-speaking workforce, similar technical standards, business and legal practices, alongside a favourable exchange rate, Malaysia is a market that offers many prospects for overseas companies which may have previously overlooked it. The EU is ASEAN’s second

largest trading partner with exports topping almost €135bn from the region into the EU in 2017. Malaysia is the UK’s second largest trading partner in ASEAN and also a major investor, with over £2.12bn in direct investments recorded in 2012. Trade between the UK and Malaysia currently centres mostly on machinery, oil and fuel, chemicals, manufactured goods and food and drink.

Malaysia is fast becoming an

educational hub of the ASEAN region. British products and services linked to education and training are worth over £280m a year. Additionally, there are over 15,000 Malaysian students studying at UK universities and the UK has the highest number of branch
