Just Chillin Recipe for Magical Love on St. Valentine’s Day

TM by Ellie Schmidt of Santa Rosa, CA. ~ eschmidt@upbeattimes.com

there are, those willing to listen when you read aloud to them. Te best books and stories the world has to offer us, to the children of all ages all over the planet.

M

Directions: Sit right down, let the children look you in the eye… You do know that children, dogs, cats, maybe even gold- fish, and parakeets, can tell immediately if you “know” them, don’t you?...It is ab- solutely

true that

adults, also known as “grown-ups,” have lost a cer- tain sparkle in the eye and no longer, or rarely, can take time to stare out a window at rain dropping on grape leaves that makes the leaves flutter and dance to music only you can hear. Perhaps adults do not ad- mit that in a whimsical mood occasionally

they wish they

could join a hummingbird sip- ping on the fine wine of clema- tis blooms on the jumbled vines near a kitchen window. Oh sigh of sadness for all grown-ups! However, when you tell a story,

or read from a book all tattered from loving hands--large, small and in-between--holding and

ain ingredients: As many children as

hugging it through the years of loving it, the children and you will create magic together. And you will feel the warmth of true love. Te re-kindling of the fires of your imagination and the sweetness of great stories results in fabulous food for the mind. Dish out in great por- tions. ~Serves the universe. Suggestions for shopping for such creative cook- ing? Let’s com- pare notes. Do you know: “…You will love to watch all the stars in the he avens…The y will all be your f riends…You— you alone—will

have stars that can laugh!—It will be as if, in place of the stars, I had given you a great number of little bells that knew how to laugh…”? Why, of course, it’s from Te

Little Prince by Antoine Marie Jean-Baptiste Roger, comte de Saint-Exupery (b. 1900). Not too surprising to discover that Saint-Exupery’s exquisite story and other literary works were translated into 300 languages and dialects. A hero of France during WWII, he was a famous aviator and a true poet. How moving that this small book is oſten given as a perfect giſt to young and old to express

“Our nemesis is time,

against which we have a single ally, memory, and even it betrays us.”

Sam Tanenhaus “A man that is young in years may be old in hours if he have lost no time. ” ~ Francis Bacon UPBEAT TIMES, INC. • February 2019 • 5

true love on Valentine’s Day. Beware. It is a book that may change you. Do not be frightened by the

silly “war” between young and old, all because of different views about mobile phones, tablets, texting and all things brilliantly conceived in t e c hn o log y these days. Science is ef- ficient mov- ing steadily fo r w ar d , ch ang ing constantly “menus” of what all of us should possess and use. Consider how we are pleased to use electric- ity,

indoor plumbing, auto-

mobiles, trains, aircraſt (well, maybe not these days), and way more. Tat does not mean we should lose the luxury of own- ing real books we can hold and cherish. We are formed and shaped by what we choose to read throughout our lives. Tese days, maybe every-

one cringes at the terribly rich, gooey sentiments expressed so vividly by the American poet Strickland Gillilan (b. 1910): “…You may have tangible wealth untold; / Caskets of jew- els and c of f e r s of gold. R ic h er than I you can never

be—I had a Mother

who read to me.” Gil- lilan worked for American

Greeting Cards. Tey figured out how to reach a

wide public for Mother’s Day. But, a basic fact: real books make an indelible imprint on child. Te very first, small “board” books are nourishing for a child to handle, sniff, ex- amine, liſt, and yes, sometimes taste.

Facts & Trivia # 1

QWERTY is the keyboard layout in the U.S for most keyboards. This layout was used in early typing days to slow down typists in order to have the typewriter in use not jam as often due to lack of typist’s speed. QWERTY is named as such because “Q.W.E.R.T.Y” are the first 6 letters on the keyboard.

DVORAK is a keyboard lay- out designed in the 1920’s, named after its creator, Au- gust Dvorak. The keys are mapped so that commonly used letters in the English language, including all the vowels, are in the home row. Also, the letters are divided evenly between hands. In this way, your hands and fingers don’t have to move much when typing. So ba- sically, DVORAK is efficient and comfortable in English; whether it works just as well in other languages is unknown.
