“Finally, a woman on paper!” These words from Alfred Stieglitz on first seeing work by Georgia O’Keeffe, began a legendary romance. This seemingly stoic pair led volatile lives often compro- mised by ambition and other lovers. Stieglitz and O’Keeffe knew most of the pivotal modern artists, all struggling to create the art they believed could change the world. 1:30 to 3:30pm
How is a painting worth $450 million? Today’s “high” art market is a connivance of money and mayhem. Artists, dealers, collectors, and auction houses all have a hand in works selling in the millions of millions. Looking at images of works, we will consider artists, such as, Richard Diebenkorn, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Francis Bacon, Cindy Sher- man, Gustav Klimt, Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. 1:30 to 3:30pm
Novelist, poet and playwright Gertrude Stein and her broth- ers were avid art collectors. As she modestly comments, without her patronage some of the artists and writers that she promoted might not have emerged as they did to eventually take over the art world. With her life partner Alice B Toklas, their famous Paris Salon hosted the likes of Picasso and Matisse, artists whose works were thought to be wildly odd. 1:30 to 3:30pm
Famed Renaissance man Leonardo da Vinci is well known for his gifted mind and brilliant artwork. What’s slightly less known about him is the fact that da Vinci was not only a strict veg- etarian, but he was also passionate about animal rights. He would buy caged birds from the Renaissance equivalent of pet stores just so he could set them free.

Lord Byron, famed English poet, was a student at Cam- bridge when he took um- brage at the university’s ban on keeping dogs as pets. So Byron decided to get tech- nical with them: Nowhere in the fine print did Byron find a clause that forbade bears from the campus, presumably because they’d never had to deal with a lunatic before. Byron not only found a bear to keep as a pet, he also took it on a leash around the grounds.
Alexandre Dumas, known for The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, felt very strongly that all his works must be presented on colored paper. He wanted all his fiction presented on blue paper, his articles on pink paper, and his poetry on yellow paper.
