SCHEME HELPS FIRMS ACHIEVE A ‘WORKING WIN’


Innovative clinical trial tests new employment support service


A pioneering scheme which aims to help people with health problems find and stay in work is now offering advice and support to hundreds of businesses across the Sheffield City Region. The ‘Working Win’ health-led employment trial, funded by the Government's Work and Health Unit and delivered by Sheffield City Region, South Yorkshire Housing Association and local NHS partners, is a clinical trial testing a new employment support service.


The trial aims to find out how good this new service is at helping people with a mental or physical health problem find work if they are unemployed, or stay in work if they're struggling. One of only two such projects in the UK, it offers individual, tailored support, working alongside healthcare professionals to ensure that people find the right jobs for them. People are already finding new jobs through the scheme, while businesses are benefiting from tailored advice on workforce wellbeing.


Mayor of the Sheffield City Region Dan Jarvis said: "Research has proved that being in good work can support good health.


“That’s why I’m proud that Sheffield City Region is one of the first areas in the UK to be trialling this new dedicated and personalised support, helping people to find work, or to stay in work if they’re struggling. “It is fantastic news that so many people are already involved with this pioneering Working Win project. I look forward to seeing the scheme help even more people find jobs that are right for them." The Working Win Health-led Employment Trial is a randomised control trial, meaning people who take part will be randomly placed into one of two research groups.


One group will receive the new service and the other group will be provided with information about existing services in their area.


The support is free of charge and does not affect any benefits people may be receiving. Those taking part need to be registered with a GP in South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw and be either out of work and want to work; or working and want support to continue in their job.


Support is also available to employers who sign up, to give them help in improving health and wellbeing in their workplace.


As every business is unique, here are five ways the trial might be able to help companies achieve a Working Win:


1. Free consultation and workplace health check An adviser can chat to you over the phone or visit your workplace to better understand your needs. We’ll go through a workplace health check with you and provide free advice and tools.


2. One-to-one coaching for your employees If employees would like to improve their wellbeing at work or return after ill health, they can visit the Working Win website to learn about the trial and self- refer. If randomly selected for the new service, they’ll receive up to 12 months of face-to-face support. This includes specialist help from an Occupational Therapist or other health professional when required.


3. Mental Health and Physical Health Awareness Training


Working Win provides free mental health and physical health awareness training for employers. There are regular workshops, online training modules, and courses available in the workplace.


4. Support to create a healthy workplace culture


Many firms recognise the business case and moral case for improving the wellbeing of their employees. However, they often lack the time to implement their good intentions. That’s where Working Win comes in. Experts will guide companies in how to make small adjustments to working patterns or role descriptions that can help retain the best people for longer and recruit a more diverse workforce.


5. Access to funding We can help employees tap into Access to Work, a Government funding scheme that can pay for specialist equipment, transport solutions or on-the-job support


Because it’s innovative and we need to know what works, Working Win is a trial, with half of all referrals heading to the service and half to existing support services.
