In October I was
delighted to join Northern Powerhouse Minister Jake Berry MP to open three new University of Sheffield advanced engineering centres, together
representing a massive £47m investment in our region.
Researchers at these new facilities will be working at the cutting edge of engineering, leading the world in areas including advanced metals testing. Their research will be translated into new technologies that power innovation and increase productivity. This is great news for the University - yet undoubtedly part of a much bigger story for South Yorkshire, the Northern Powerhouse and the UK. These centres provide more proof of Sheffield City Region’s excellence in advanced manufacturing and engineering. And this expertise is only possible due to truly collaborative relationships forged between politicians, the public sector and the private sector. Working together, we’re making a difference. Pioneering research in our region is providing innovative solutions to real-world problems. Academia and industry are working hand in hand to grow our economy by doing the things South Yorkshire has always done best; innovating and making. Our strong heritage in manufacturing industry is now reshaping manufacturing for the 21st Century.
And the new centres I saw couldn’t be better examples of how this expertise has the potential to change the world around us.
The new Laboratory for Verification and Validation will be a world-leading acoustics and vibration testing facility, enabling the production of lighter, safer and more efficient products for sectors including energy, aerospace, automotive and civil engineering. At the Integrated Civil and Infrastructure Research Centre, researchers will apply data, artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing techniques to infrastructure we all use every day, such as transport systems, water supplies, waste management and flood defences. And at the new Royce Translational Centre, research will be conducted into areas including lightweight solutions for transport and new steels for nuclear.
The ambition, excellence and capacity for innovation is clear, even to those of us who aren’t experts in the field. And as Mayor, I’m determined that this world-leading
excellence is a catalyst for new opportunities, new jobs, higher wages and greater prosperity for our region. As part of the platform I was elected upon, I promised to fight for a more inclusive form of
prosperity. In order to do this I will establish a more vibrant, successful and co-operative economy in South Yorkshire. That means all of us playing our part in creating the economy we need, as well as benefiting from the proceeds of growth. And I’m proud to be driving this vision forward. I’m taking the lead on creating a Global Innovation Corridor that sweeps through the heart of the Sheffield City Region – connecting up people, businesses and ideas.
These new advanced engineering centres, both of our universities, and the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation, are fundamental parts in this corridor connecting Sheffield with Doncaster, Rotherham and Barnsley.
Firmly rooted in the strengths that already exist in the region, the Global Innovation Corridor will incorporate world-leading assets such as the National College for High Speed Rail, the Olympic Legacy Park and Sheffield Hallam University’s Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre, Barnsley’s Digital Media Centre and Doncaster Sheffield Airport.
Focused around our skills and specialisms, it will be a global magnet for people, industry and innovators and a huge contributor to our nation’s prosperity. Being shortlisted for millions of pounds in Transforming Cities funding by the Government means that this vision is already becoming a reality. But we cannot be complacent. We need to continue being ambitious, being bold, and telling the world why we’re so good at what we do.
I want our children to grow up knowing that the future of aerospace, automotive and digital technologies is right here on their doorstep – and, whatever school they go to and wherever they live, those careers are open to them.
I want entrepreneurs to know that they can start up, grow and thrive in a business-friendly environment where academic excellence is at their fingertips. And I want all of us in Sheffield City Region to benefit from the investment and opportunities our Global Innovation Corridor will bring. The vision is clear. Let’s make it happen.
