Since proper temperature regulation is not always possible and avoiding these com- mon household items or building materials would be extremely difficult, the easiest way to prevent mold growth in a home is by controlling moisture. By fixing leaking pipes, replacing older windows, or regu- lating moisture levels with dehumidifiers, a person can prevent future mold growth once the old mold and moisture sources have been addressed.

If your home has had or is currently dealing with moisture issues, you could be at risk of mold intrusion. It is important to locate and identify the true source before investing in remediation. Visual inspections by a trained professional are recommended by the EPA and CDC. These inspections can provide a plethora of information about the healthfulness of a home, but sometimes this is not enough. This is where laboratory analysis can help.

The analysis of air and surface samples from the affected area can be used to locate a mold intrusion otherwise invisible to the naked eye or to determine if the remedia- tion has adequately removed the problem. The EPA recommends, “Sampling for mold should be conducted by professionals who have specific experience in designing mold sampling protocols, sampling methods and interpreting results. Sample analysis should follow analytical methods recommended by the American Industrial Hygiene As- sociation (AIHA), the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (AC- GIH), or other professional organizations.”
