Adam Putnam-Commissioner of Agriculture It’s hard to overstate the

impact that Florida’s fairs, festivals and livestock shows have on our commu- nities, our youth agriculture organizations and Florida’s agriculture industry. They are part of what make Flori- da, Florida. It’s been one of the greatest privileges of my life to have served as your Commissioner of Agri-

culture for the last eight years, working hand in hand with your members to reconnect Floridians with our roots in the land. I attended many events every year as Commissioner of

Agriculture, and one of my absolute favorite annual events was the Florida State Fair. I never missed an opportunity as Commissioner to get more of Florida’s elected officials, whether it was the Governor and Cabinet or members of the Legislature, to attend the State Fair and take in all the sights, sounds and smells. I even persuaded a few col- leagues to join me on the Giant Slide!

I did this because, having

participated in fairs and live- stock shows growing up, I know their value in bringing communities together, cultivat- ing tomorrow’s leaders and sharing the time-honored tradi- tions of Florida agriculture. They are also a constant re- minder of the jobs and food security that come from a strong agriculture industry. For all these reasons and more, I’ve been proud to help

fund awards and premiums for deserving youth exhibitors, an important piece in the development of tomorrow’s agri- cultural leaders. In addition, we’ve worked hard to grow the number of agriculture education facilities around the state, helping fairs and livestock shows, local governments and others access millions of dollars of state funding to build facilities to educate Florida’s residents and visitors about its impact on our economy, culture and quality of life. Your organization has a daunting task ahead. In the next

30 years, Florida’s population will be nearing 30 million, and the need to tell the story of Florida agriculture will be greater than ever before. I believe deeply in what you are doing to tell the story of Florida agriculture’s past and future, and I have great confidence that you’re up to chal- lenge. Thank you for your support over the last eight years, and

thank you for your dedication to advancing agriculture in Florida and reconnecting our communities with one anoth- er and with the land. Most importantly, thank you for all you’re doing to raise our most precious Florida crop: our children.
