d70 DESIGNER KITCHEN & BATHROOM AWARDS 2018

British Design & Manufacturing Award

WINNER: Alice Poole, Alice Poole Architects

Sponsored by

t took Alice Poole 20 years, three planning applications, three refusals and three appeals to be able to infi ll the corner of the kitchen to make the side wall in one straight line and increase the length of the conservatory by 1.8m. The resulting kitchen is ergonomic, opening up into the adjacent conservatory to give lightness and space that was lacking previously.

I

Poole designed her fi rst kitchen 35 years ago and used sunrays as the theme with base units made of pine and wall units glazed with stained glass. She has always reminisced fondly about her sunray kitchen and decided to contemporise it. Different samples of doors and fi nish were made to achieve the look. She wanted the grain of the wood to follow the lines of the sunrays and so solid maple was used rather than veneered boards. To create a fl ow, Poole decided to make the perimeter units of the main section of kitchen maple and stainless steel and the section in the dining area, white.

The main worktop is pure white quartz but with a special stone in turquoise for the island so that it echoed the stained glass panel in the conservatory. The island design was modifi ed to suit the size of the slab with an offcut used as an upstand to the sideboard unit in the Conservatory. A glass fronted unit has a leaded panel in the sunray design with clear glass and, being top lit, light permeates the whole unit through glass shelves.

The sunray design continues round in to the conservatory which has a feature stained glass panel in the gable end. The chimney breast was opened up and fi tted internally with shelves for crockery. There is also a side board unit with drawers for cutlery and table linen behind sunray doors. This has been kept at worktop height to give a view into the kitchen and the framed mirror sitting on top of the Amazonite upstand is a design feature whilst further opening up the space. On the opposite wall there is a bookcase which is used for cookery books, vases and art books.
