The original space for the kitchen was requisitioned to create a nursery for the new family, so the kitchen was moved to what was an awkward corridor space and small offi ce, knocked though to create a generous open-plan area for living, cooking, dining, and entertaining.


The new kitchen is designed to look more like high-end furniture, with the kitchen island resembling a dresser and fl oating above the fl oor, carefully hiding all the electrics and ducting inside the brass leg structure. The tall bank of units are covered in the same hand-fi nished brass-work as the wardrobes in the entry way, so it is hard to tell where the kitchen begins.


All tall units – apart from the fridge and freezer – have slide-and-hide doors, revealing more counter space, a large pantry unit and another Quooker tap/ tea station, as well as the oven and microwave, so that the main appliances can be completely hidden from view. panels in the island and in the walls house all the table linens, providing additional storage that is not on view to maintain a clean, sleek look and stop the area looking too functional.


A combination of handless units and those with bespoke horn pieces from Ochre help demarcate areas and break up the space into lots of different segments so that instead of appearing as a single kitchen, it gives the appearance of a collection of furniture.


The hand-beaten brass panelling, cornicing, the bur oak veneer and the proportions of the units were all selected as a nod to the building’s


art deco heritage.


The family has a connection with Paris, so Stanford used one of their original artworks as inspiration and the large island slab of blue fusion marble is reminiscent of Van Gogh's The Starry Night, which sums up the bohemian, chaotic and beautiful design of the rest of the apartment.


The judges were impressed with the execution of a design that they felt raises some fascinating discussion points on what makes a design ‘luxurious’, but which ultimately ticked all the boxes in delivering a truly one-off project.
