Christmas Fare The supermarkets can offer a serious
amount of choice and have the advantage of coming ready-made and relatively cheap at a few pounds a piece.
Yule log There are many different versions of a Yule log, but the essential basis is a rolled sponge covered in chocolate and decorated with a Father Christmas, holly or sometimes a few scattered pine cones. For baking fans, it makes sense to prepare
your own and there are quite literally a million different ones to choose from. From Nigel Slater to Nigella Lawson, there is no shortage of recipes. But for the lazier types, Tesco and
Sainsbury can fill the gap for a couple of quid. Something more sumptuous, such as a humdinger from Hotel Chocolat will cost
ten times that. Whichever way you go, the Yule log does make for a fine dinner table centre piece.
Trifle To ring the changes at the biggest feast of the year, why not prepare a trifle? After several courses of traditional fare, it could be what your dinner table guests are craving! In fairness, a festive trifle is nothing new
but the sheer variety to choose from is, frankly, staggering. Banoffee, Bakewell, Eton mess, eggnog
and cheesecake are all trendy variations on the old faithful constructed of sponge, cream, custard and jelly.
Cheese and biscuits For some the idea of a heavy dessert at the end of Christmas dinner can induce feelings of mild nausea, so why not offer some local Kentish cheese, water biscuits and a glass of decent port? It allows your guests to opt out or take as big (or small) a portion as they feel comfortable with.
