Panto time again - oh, yes it is! Aladdin/

Hazlitt Theatre I

T’S perhaps hard to credit it but Richard Blackwood has been in the public consciousness for nearly two decades.

Once an edgy, near-the-knuckle stand-up comic, Blackwood has astutely learnt that longevity in show business would require a range of talents and the ability to diversify. So it is fair to say that, at 46, he has broadened his appeal having performed as a rapper, trod the West End stage and appeared as Vince Hubbard in EastEnders for three years.

It is no secret that the HazlitTeatre has invested heavily in geting his talents and fan base onto their boards this Christmas. He plays the Genie in Aladdin – his fourth

panto role – alongside last year’s crowd-pleaser, Elizabeth Bright, this time as Princess Jasmine. The star said: “I really like Maidstone -

it’s the place that everybody needs to head to in Kent. The people are so welcoming and friendly. The Hazlitt is a proper, traditional town centre theatre. I just can’t wait to get started.”

Lewis takes on the role of Slave of the Ring A HazlitTeatre spokesman said the panto needed someone in the public eye who had appeal across the generations. “You don’t get a bigger audience on BBC than EastEnders!,” said a theatre spokesman “We think that he will be worth it.” Clearly, there is a lot riding on Aladdin, as the panto pays for much of the other stuff the

Hazlit puts on for the benefit of Maidstone’s community performing arts sector.
